Yellow Daffs

 Daffodils are blooming everywhere! My garden is dotted with their yellow heads, turning to face the sun and blowing in the spring breeze. This is, again, a layered watercolor, done on 300# Arches paper. It's approximately 10" x 7 3/4". Hope Spring is in full bloom wherever you are!

"A Pair of Tulips"

Spring-tulips-a perfect match. This 11 x 14 oil painting was done on stretched canvas. It's a little different composition for a floral, with the leaves coming down from the corner. I really liked the shadows on the tabletop and decided they were an important part of the total painting.

Yellow Barns

"Yellow Barns" is an oil painting of an area on the Connecticut coast with beautiful marshes and inlets. These barns are in the town of Clinton and on the afternoon I was there, the sun was hitting the sides of the barn with a warm glow. I particularly liked the steeple in the background, and faded it out a little more than the reality to set it further back in the picture plane.
This painting just sold and I thought it would be fun to share the news and also show a glimpse of our warmer weather and flowers to come!

"Chianti Hillside"

This watercolor painting was inspired by the beautiful Chianti region of Italy. The rolling hills, punctuated by stone villas and vineyards, are breathtaking. This painting was done a while ago, but looking out today at gray skies threatening snow, it just seemed that a "trip" to Italy would perk up the day.

"New Day"

"New Day" is another of those ethereal, quiet pieces that I've been having fun painting. It doesn't depict a particular place, but just speaks of sky, a small piece of land and water. It's done with layered washes of watercolor, 8 1/2 x 5 3/4", on Lana 140" cold pressed watercolor paper. My desire is that it imparts a peaceful, hopeful feeling. Who doesn't need more of that?

Green Apples with Tulips

I have a thing about fruit and flowers. I love the contrast of the usually soft petals with the firmer, shinier texture of most fruit. Since I also love playing with complementary colors, I liked the red/green color palette of this setup. This piece has been brewing for quite a while (I posted the drawing a long, long time ago). My original drawing was calling for a lighter background, but I decided to go for the drama of the dark instead. Maybe the next one will be light? I just might try that!
This still life is 8 3/4" x 11" and is painted on 140# Arches watercolor paper.

Evening Reflection

Evening Reflection is a small watercolor, 6.75 x 10" done on Arches 140# paper. I like doing these little moody, atmospheric pieces by layering washes and working wet into wet and just seeing what happens! They tend not to be a particular place, just a remembrance of many landscapes I have seen and loved. The biggest challenge with these pieces in reproducing for the internet is getting the color as close to the original painting as possible. With layering, you get many subtleties of color, not always easy to capture and reproduce. If anyone has any tips on that aspect, please let me know!
