Green Apples with Tulips

I have a thing about fruit and flowers. I love the contrast of the usually soft petals with the firmer, shinier texture of most fruit. Since I also love playing with complementary colors, I liked the red/green color palette of this setup. This piece has been brewing for quite a while (I posted the drawing a long, long time ago). My original drawing was calling for a lighter background, but I decided to go for the drama of the dark instead. Maybe the next one will be light? I just might try that!
This still life is 8 3/4" x 11" and is painted on 140# Arches watercolor paper.

Evening Reflection

Evening Reflection is a small watercolor, 6.75 x 10" done on Arches 140# paper. I like doing these little moody, atmospheric pieces by layering washes and working wet into wet and just seeing what happens! They tend not to be a particular place, just a remembrance of many landscapes I have seen and loved. The biggest challenge with these pieces in reproducing for the internet is getting the color as close to the original painting as possible. With layering, you get many subtleties of color, not always easy to capture and reproduce. If anyone has any tips on that aspect, please let me know!

"In the Spotlight I"

Well, the month of January has flown by, with little time for painting. February 1/2 gone--I'd better get busy! This posting is for a framed painting I've put up for auction on DPW Auctions. I had done this to really push the darks and to see how vibrant I could make this watercolor. After some tweaking, this was my result. It's framed archivally, with all acid-free materials and u.v. filtering glass, a must for watercolor.

Two Yellow Pears

 Just a simple set up of two ripe, yellow pears. They are nestled on an antique doily. They're ready for port and stilton!

This is a 5 x 5" still life oil painting on canvas board.

"Hint of Autumn"

The northwest hills of Connecticut have some gorgeous farmlands with beautiful vistas. This barn was in the Kent area and you could just see the trees starting to turn and a few fallen leaves on the ground. I was struck by the strong sunlight on the silo and left side of the barn, and the strong rusty red color of the barn against the sky. This landscape painting was done on Arches watercolor cold press paper and is 10 1/4" x 14 1/4". I was pleased that it was accepted into the 2011 Connecticut Watercolor Society Fall Juried Show.

Always a Good Day for a Ride

This watercolor painting is of my husband's Harley Davidson Softail--every year I paint something for his business Holiday card and thought this would be unique! It can be hard for bikers to put away their motorcycles for the winter--they keep hoping for just one more beautiful day for a last ride of the season. This is a bit extreme, but hope you think it's fun.

The painting is 9 x 12, done on Canson watercolor paper. I guess the genre for this has to be "motorcycle art"!

Dappled Sunlight

About a month ago, as the weather was just starting to turn cooler, I brought home a lovely bouquet of sunflowers. Arranged in a vase, I set them by the french door in the sunlight, and captured some photos that could possibly be paintings. I particularly liked the photo which was the starting point for this painting--it was receiving dappled sunlight and there were beautiful darks at the bottom of the flower. I made this sunflower the "star" and quieted down the two in the background. This watercolor painting is 8.5" x 11", done on Arches 140# acid-free watercolor paper. It is double matted to approximately 14.5" x 17".
